What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel uses acid to remove layers of damaged skin. This method of exfoliation will reveal newer, softer skin. The acids applied to the face can vary in strength, from mild to strong. The stronger the acid that is used, the deeper the penetration for the skin will be. This is typical of correcting acne scarring, fine wrinkles or serious pigmentation issues.

Chemical peels restore skin and improve texture in these areas:

  • Face

  • Shoulders

  • Hands

  • Back

  • Chest

Types of Chemical Peels

Jessner’s Peel is great for those who have pigmentation, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, or struggle with acne. This peel will brighten pigmentation due to acne, melasma or photo-damaged skin. It will increase cell turnover to improve the look and feel of the skin.

Lactic Acid Peel exfoliates and hydrates dry aging skin. This peel is gel-based and requires no downtime. This peel is also suitable for those who have acneic or keratinized skin.

MandeliClear Peel is a deeper peel that was created specifically for those who struggle with pigmentation issues associated with skin color. This peel will brighten pigmentation due to acne, melasma or photo-damaged skin.

Dermafrost Salicylic Acid Peel addresses all aspects of acneic skin. With 12.5% strength, this peel is designed to cut through oil, reduce bacteria and decrease inflammation for those who struggle with acne. This salicylic acid peel results in a clear, oil-free complexion.

How is a chemical peel performed?

Prior to receiving your chemical peel, photos will be taken of your face. This is so we can track your progress with the peel(s) and show you before and after images. Your skin will then be cleansed to remove surface oils and make-up. The chemical agent is then applied to the skin. Some chemical peels will be applied in layers. After a designated amount of time, some chemical peels will be neutralized with another product. Many of today’s newer chemical peels, do not require neutralization. After the treatment, a moisturizer and sunblock may be applied.

What to expect after a chemical peel?

After a chemical peel, it is common for your face to be a little red and have some peeling for a week to ten days. After a light peel, your skin may tingle and it might feel like a light sunburn and you can apply make-up. After a deep peel performed by the medical staff at Lazaderm, it is common to have a few days of discomfort and tenderness. The new skin must be protected from future damage. Do not go out in the sun or peel off loose skin. It is important to allow the skin to slough off on its own to help prevent any scarring.

How noticeable are the results?

Results of the chemical peel will vary, depending on the strength of the chemical applied to the face. Mild peels will remove only the dead cells from the surface of your skin, so results will not be as dramatic as deeper chemical peels. Medium peels are more aggressive and may reduce fine lines in addition to improvement of sun damage from the skin. The deep peels provided by medical personnel will tighten the skin and eliminate deep wrinkles.

Is a chemical peel safe?

There is a very small risk of infection with chemical peels. The more aggressive the chemical peel the more likely you are to have complications although the risks are very low, even for the more aggressive chemical peels. If you happen to develop a cold sore or fever blister before your skin can heal, it is possible that this can spread to the whole treated area and cause scarring. It is important to tell your medical provider about your history of cold sores and they can start you on an antiviral medication prior to your treatment. Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation can also be an issue after a chemical peel, especially for darker-skinned men and women.

Can chemical peels be used on darker skin types?

Absolutely, darker skin types can be treated with appropriate chemical peels, but it is very important to make sure to pretreat and prepare the skin before the chemical peel. It is also very important to protect the skin from sun exposure following treatment of darker skin types with chemical peels.

How long does a chemical peel last?

Keeping up with your skin care and maintaining the healthy skin that is now exposed is the best way to ensure that you have long-lasting results. Limiting your time to sun exposure, stopping smoking and limiting your alcohol will greatly benefit your health and skin as you age and continue to heal.
