Does My Skin Look Normal After Tattoo Removal?

Many patients come to our Aesthetic Clinic in Chandler for a tattoo removal consultation. One of the most frequently asked questions our providers receive is "Will my skin look normal after tattoo removal?".

In this blog, our provider answers the most-asked questions about the side effects of laser tattoo removal.

Will it Leave a Scar?

After you have completed your determined number of sessions to remove your tattoo at Lazaderm in Chandler, your skin will heal back to its normal state. With advanced laser technology and highly skilled providers, you can rest assured that there will be no scarring caused by our laser.

Typically, our provider will recommend scheduling a minimum of 6-8 weeks between the sessions to allow the skin enough time to heal. Stacking the treatments too close can cause damage and permanent side effects to the skin.

If you have scars from getting the tattoo in the first place, the pre-existing scars will likely still remain. During a consultation, our provider will examine the tattoo and let the patient know what to expect in terms of scarring from the initial tattoo appointment. If your tattoo is not raised, it is more likely that your skin will heal after your appointment.

Improper Aftercare Can Pose a Risk

Aftercare is very important. Even if the treatment is performed properly by a certified technician. Scarring can occur if the post-care instructions are not followed carefully.

All patients should expect some levels of side effects including:

  • redness

  • tenderness

  • swelling

  • blistering

  • scabs, bruising

  • hyperpigmentation: the skin in the treated area is darker than the natural skin tone.

  • hypopigmentation: the skin appears bleached.

If proper protocols for treatments and post-care are followed, all of these side effects are temporary.

Redness, tenderness and swelling typically subside within a day or two post-treatment. Blisters usually appear within 24 hours of treatment. Scabs, bruising, and blistering may take up to a week or longer to heal. You should avoid picking scabs and taking care of blisters; otherwise, scarring can happen. Both hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation are temporary and resolve naturally with time.

All patients should avoid sun exposure before, during, and after each treatment.
